The radiator and bumper etc are already removed so I might as well just get on with it.

The thought had crossed my mind.

There is a very slight bevel on the pipe edge already though.

Are u just pushing the pipe in /. Did u try to turn the pipe clock wise or so. as u push it in. ?

Yup I've tried all sorts of twisting/turning/wiggling/slightly different angles
I've tried different greases, freezing the pipe, less/no grease, etc.

I have used a wire-brush disc in the end of my dremel to clear the housing perfectly.

Every time, I can feel a little bit of the rubber from the front. I see how the pipe feels, and it doesn't want to stay put, I allow it to pop back out and the seal has been squashed out a bit at the flat end.

How about using oil instead of grease. its thinner and it might slide in better.
