My Ride: '05 545i - scheduled for ED pickup in Munich on 7/22!
Default

AFAIF, no one on the bimmerfest ED forum has been able to prevent holes being drilled in their front bumper these days, so I don't think there's a way to prevent it right now.

CONGRATULATIONS CVT Benhogan!!!

And by the way:
Guys,
Please explain it to the me ("newbie" here), what's the whole deal with this "european pick-up"???
Why do they have such thing? What's the sense there?
Is there a price advantage? Or, is it just to have a adventure while buying your new BMW?

And the practical things:
- Do you have to register this car first in the EU, and then re-register it in the US?
- Do they make you drill holes in front to put a EU plates?
(personally, living for a while in California, I would never drill my front bumper in a beauty like E60 is to put anything in front there, as it was never mandatory to have anything in front, well, at least in LA...),
Well, maybe except for some californian bugs....

Oh, and one more question:
Are you allowed / capable to order diesel engine to be transported to the US?
if not, is it complicated just to buy a BMW with diesel here and then export it individually to the States?

Nobody like diesels there?? C'mon!
All your questions can be answered here:
http://www.bmwusa.com/bmwexperience/europe...avid=overviewed
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25

But to sum up, yes there is a price advantage. There's a ED MSRP and a ED invoice, that are both lower than US delivery MSRP and US invoice. When taking into consideration the costs of travel expenses, it can be like a free trip to Europe compared to taking delivery in the US.

The real "purpose" of the ED program has never been disclosed. Some assume it costs less to ship over a used car rather than a new one. While others, including myself, believe BMW offers the lower price because the German government may be subsidizing it, due to the increased tourism generated by the ED program.

The easiest way to imagine how ED works is to think of it as if a US customer is simply "borrowing" the car he ordered, between the time it is made at the factory and the time it gets on the ship for the US. So its just like placing an order at any US dealer. That means everything is handled by the US dealer, customer can only buy a US car (no diesels, M Sport, etc). While the customer is driving in Europe, he and the car must abide by all local laws (license plates, temporary insurance and registration given to you by BMW, etc.)

I have posted some pics and a brief writeup of my ED here:

Trust me, for therapy, I visit my dealer's lot on Sundays.

I do exactly what you do (walking/driving around the dealer's lot on Sundays). I usually do it at Fields, which one do you visit?

BTW, why are so many people saying "FINALLY" on your purchase? I have not been on this site for a few months since I sold the 545 so I might have missed something.

Great color choice!!! Enjoy.

Yeah, not many but always a pleasant sight seeing one. I suspect the 550s sit longer on dealer lots than do the 530s. Trust me, for therapy, I visit my dealer's lot on Sundays.

The dealer via email provided detailed info on the car's production status. I'm not sure how many codes there are, but much more detailed than the owners circle info.

What dealer did you use? I just purchased mine for Euro Delivery at Knauz.

I've waited a year to get the car. FINALLY is well deserved. Well, NUTTS is probably better.

I used Irv Robinson at Motorwerks, he has been great.

I got mine from Joern Esser at Passport BMW in MD. He is really good to work with. Even though I wanted to do this one closer to home, but I was late and could not get anyone to get me a 2006. The reason for the 06 is the exceptional 24-month lease deal going on right now.

NUTTS for a 550 is alright.

I almost used Irv to get a 750 but then another dealer was able to get me a 2006 550, which was might first choice.
