I tried to get the Gene garage door to work with the BMW remote buttons in the mirror. I followed the instructions in the BMW manual but could not get it to work.

What is the trick?

You could try following the instructions in your garage manual if you still have it. Thats how I programed mine.

for those garage door openers with 'security plus' which is the rotating code change program, you have some tricky steps to follow. It is not real straightforward and easy. Read the instructions carefully, and look for that extra step or button that you have to use by going back and forth between the car and the motor unit with its own controls. Read it carefully again and try the steps, you may also have to read conflicting info on your user manual from the Genie unit. Sometimes theirs holds the hint that is missing in the BMW one. Check Genie's web site for infor too.

Some garage door openers require you to register each new remote control. This includes when you copy a remote control into the BMW.

Your garage manual should have instructions on this.... but on my opener, it works like this.

1. Take existing remote and follow the BMW directions to copy the remote into the memory of your BMW.

2. There is a red button on my garage door opener which you press to start the programming mode. Once you press that button, a red light comes on and you have 30 seconds to activate your new remote.

3. Go into the BMW and press and hold the programmed button until the garage lights flash, to indicate a successful link.

4. Your car should now operate the garage.

Just to add, my car operates my two Genie openers and yes, it took me a couple tries to get things programmed properly...

And one more thing, which is likely in the instructions if I would RTFM, the button to program of the three available is the one on the right.

I'm confused as to what you're saying...are you referring to the three buttons on the mirror or some other buttons on the garage door opener? (My Genie opener only has one button on it.)
