Gearbox 'jerk' on startup?
#1
Hi,
I was hoping others might be able to share if they have also had this experience.
When I start my E60, often times, I notice a little jerk, as if the 'gearbox is engaging'.
Anyone?
Thanks.

You have automatic or manual? Starting on a hill?
Automatic - and this happens when starting on level ground.

The correct sequence when stopping the car is - stop, apply parking brake, remove your foot from the brake pedal and let it settle where it wants to, then put it in "P". For departing, the sequence is, foot on the brake, release parking brake, gearbox into gear.
This isn't unique to BMWs in my experience. I've noticed this with all my auto-box cars.

I'll give that a go before I set off for home today.
Thanks for the reminder.
The tips on proper sequence of parking etc is a good reminder too.
A related question. If the car is parked on a dead level road, is there any harm in just using Park, and not engaging the handbrake? Just curious.
Thanks again.

I get that when I park on my driveway (which isn't level) if I put the gearbox into "P" and let the car settle before I put the parking brake on. The reason being that the car's weight is being held by the gearbox (really bad idea). The "P" setting doesn't involve any brakes at all. It's similar to leaving a manual box in gear.
The correct sequence when stopping the car is - stop, apply parking brake, remove your foot from the brake pedal and let it settle where it wants to, then put it in "P". For departing, the sequence is, foot on the brake, release parking brake, gearbox into gear.
