Just happened today out of the blue, I went on my lunch break and when i unlocked the doors my gas tank door opened too. I couldn't get it to close, the only way to close it is to hold it closed then press the lock button my keys so that the pin comes out and holds it into place. But as soon as I click un-lock it pops open again. Anyone know what I am having this problem?

Perhaps you just discovered a new feature: The automatic gas/petrol or diesel tank door.

I can't find that part that holds the gas tank door ( i was thinking that it was some kinda magnet or something)

I played with my gas door and it seems that there is a spring in the hinge section that snaps open or closed. It is the spring pressure that holds the door closed. Without unlatching the door by pushing it in to make it pop out about an inch, you can grab the edge and just open it. So, it appears nothing holds it in except the spring pressure. Of course, once you lock your doors, there is a pin that pops out to lock the door shut.

Sounds like the spring in your hinge must have given out.

This doesn't sound quite right, unless they have changed since my 2004 car. There is a spring which pops the door open but there is a latch that catches it when pushed shut and release when pushed again. Sounds like that catch is not working properly, especially if it stays shut if you hold the door closed then lock the car. When you lock, a secondary catch holds the door shut, pushing it or not. Sure you can pull it a bit and it has some play but it should catch to close and your's is not doing that. Sounds like a trip to the dealer...

Its the spring that pops the door open, the spring won't stay down, it should go down when pressed, going to go to bmw and buy the new part tomorrow and install it.
