My Ride: 2005 530i (Silver-Gray, Gray Lthr., Anthracite Maple) with Steptronic, Prem. Pkg., Logic 7, Xenons & Chrome factory wheels.
In the past, I've periodically used Red Line gas additive to keep the injectors clean on Toyota/Lexus cars.
Am wondering what BMW's position is on the use of additives and whether or not it's recommended (or needed)? From what I understand, the low-emission California gas uses less additives to meet EPA requirements, so injector cleanliness may be an issue.

BMW sells additive, and it's cheap. About $2.50 a bottle.
I keep a case of it in my trunk at all times. I use 1 bottle every 3 or 4 full tanks of gas.
I only use Chevron 93 Octane gas, also.

BMW has very specific guidelines it has published about fuel additives and detergents - mainly with the assumption that the gas vendor is adding them.
Chevron is a Toptiergas vendor - as is Shell, which is what I use.

Among other things, fuel from these vendors is supposed to help keep the engine clean.

If you purchase fuel from a Top Tier supplier, you will certainly get all of the additives your engine needs to stay clean. It does not matter if you are in California or not... There really is no need to buy after market injector cleaner if you have been fueling with a Top grade gasoline.

I've never used additive and only used either Chevron or Shell on my 99' Toyota Solara V6 since I bought it new. The engine still runs really smoothly and absolutely no machanical problem or rough running at all. It has 150.000 miles on the odometer. I don't recommend to spend money on additives unless you really want to.
