Hey everyone,

Had a really freak incident today that could be a lesson learned for us all.

My wife likes to drive on E for some reason, so today when I went to help a friend move, I wasn't surprised to find the car on E again. The range was 31 miles, and I was just going down the street. Helped him move and followed him to his new house. When I left, I figured I'll stop for gas, the range was 12 or 10. Pulled in the gas station and NO WALLET! Friend was already gone when I called.

So I tried to make it home watching the range. I remembered that the manual said the engine shuts down on the last two gallons, or something like that. So I tried to make it home. The range went down to 1 and -----. I know I drove about 7 miles on ------, home and then to the gas station. I don't know what the capacity is in the tank, but for any of you in an emergency situation, there is some fuel left after 0 miles.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for being the one to try it first. Good info to know. Although I typically don't go below 1/4, especially during the winters in Colorado.

I think there was a thread about how low you could go, and think that you have the record now.

Ya I think I've heard about still being able to drive on --- but NO WAY will I try that... lowest the car has been was I think when it said 30 miles left... and thats still over a gallon

I dont like to run on empty... sucks up crap from the bottom of the tank... dont know if thats entirly true but I'll stick to believing in that... plus you'll never know if you're in that kind of situation... I try not to run too low on gas.

i once drove approx. 10 miles with ---- already displayed without the engine shutting... i wasnt going to tell you guys because it isnt really good as it sucks all the dirt from the tank but i did it in an emergency situation.

on a long trip i drove around 200 miles downhill, so the computer calculated a very optimistic range, the last gas station before my destination is about 50 miles and the computer said i could go for about 80, so i didnt fill the tank and decided to just drive and then get the gas, but that drive is uphill and with a lot of curves, and my range started going down like crazy, I was really scared of running out of fuel in the middle of a dark road.

I think it took around 67 liters to fill the tank so it still had another 3 liters in the tank.

Just fill it often and avoid any ugly situations

HAHA. Last time i had a empty tank with my brand new 330I, it was pretty embarassing trying to push the car out of the road. The car stop on the red light and the engine started shaking, and then it stopped. Guess what, the gas station is just at the other corner of the road.

It's pretty bad to drive with empty tank, i think it will damage the fuel pump.

LOL

true my wife doesn't like to visit the fuel station too.
Her Mini does -10 / 15 after running dry according to the computer all the time. Because she knows it is possible it is driven till the last drop.
Guess there will not be any residual in the tank since it is sucked dry all the time.
