Just a quick word of caution -
Although I don't own an e60, I have a BMW now and have owned several in the past.?
I used to run the fuel level down all the time and went through several fuel pumps in the process.? I was advised by more than one mechanic that running the fuel level down to near empty can be hard on the fuel pump (something to do with the pump over-spinning due to fuel starvation) and can cause premature failure.?
Don't know if this is still true, but I thought I'd pass this along FWIW.

KYRIACOS: what you said makes sense, I will try to notice that next time.

It's true that you might associate a high range with a particular gas station, if that station is one you visit right after you get off the motorway.

[/quote]From the owners manual
Displays the estimated cruising range
available with the remaining fuel. The system
calculates the cruising range based on
operating conditions and the amount of fuel
remaining in the tank. The basis for the calculations
is the average fuel consumption
over the preceding 20 miles/30 km.
