My Ride: 1993 Toyota Supra MKIV (6-speed Targa top) - SP67DBB Single Turbo
Yesterday in the middle of the highway my car suddenly went into the emergency program and a couple of seconds it later the engine shut off.
I was able to start the car again, although with difficulty. I limped to the nearest BMW garage and there they diagnosed a problem with the fuel system. They could not tell what it was until they would have checked the car further.
After clearing the errors in the system they were able to start the car again. They told me that the same morning they got a dealer bulletin about defective fuel pumps for cars produced between November 2004 and January 2005 for 3, 5, 6 and 7 series. I could even read that BMW advised their dealers to stock up on fuel pumps (!) because even on new cars they were advised to replace the fuel pumps before handing the car over to the customer.
I decided to take the risk and drive home. On the way I called up my own garage and the servicer manager told me that he the problem sounded familiar and he had been informed by BMW repeatedly that more and more production months were affected by this problem. I did not get far on the way. After 20 miles I got stranded again and this time I could not get the car started again at all. Luckily I was close to my work so someone towed me there. The i-Drive says fuel pump failure so this doesn't look good. Worse thing is that these fuel pumps are on two week's backorder so I am without my car for at least 2 1/2 weeks.
Does anyone else here has had problems with their fuel pumps?

My dealer confirmed they have had problems both with 530d and 525d and that there is a large recall ongoing.

we also have a 525d from 12/2004. But so far no problems. Do you have to pay for that to replace the fuel pump or is it for free??
About a month ago within a 4 day time period both fuel pumps went bad on my 545, the last time on Autobahn 3, lucky for me they were able to come and pick up the car. The BMW dealer still has not gotten the BMW Assist or the SOS or what ever is suppose to help in these situations working yet.

Wow sorry to hear that Flavio. For a car you probably paid close to 70k euro's for you would expect the fuel pump to last a little longer. I also read something about the fuel pump issue. I hope my car (a december build) will stay clear of these problems.

I heard from my dealer yesterday. It is probably the fuel pump in the tank that is not working. Last week I got the stationary heating installed and that requires a different fuel pump in the tank. Either they forgot to install the different pump or it is just a coincedence that it broke. Hopefully I have my car back on Monday.
