Fuel Pump Dies

Filled up in Boulder with Shell high octane and drove 80 miles home. When I got in my drive the engine started to studder. If I accelerated the engine would die. 8-10 second cranks. Played with it for an hour with same results. Had it towed to the dealership who "could not duplicate" the problem. Even though the HPFP tested perfectly good the dealer replaced the pump but did not update the software. Problem went away.

What I like about the 535xi is how well behaved it is. It waited until I got back from Boulder, coming into my driveway, before it started acting up.

how many miles do/did you have on your car? it seem premature for a 2008 model.

The title of this thread states that the problem occurred at 9K miles.

Juris, sorry to hear that the HPFP problem affected your 535.

WOW What can I say? I am very sorry to hear about the fuel pump, but - sorry to say this - these days it is almost to be expected.

At the risk of sounding redundant, let me just say: BMW is the last car company I'd ever expect to cover up such a wide-spread issue and IMO their reputation may be tarnished for a long time if they don't design a working pump and do a proper recall soon enough - seems like we see pumps go several times a day - UNACCEPTABLE.

Sorry for the Kanye'ing of your thread, I really hope the issue is resolved soon.

Sorry to hear about your fuel pump. My 535 xi did the same thing on Saturday (July 2008 production and 19,xxx miles on the car). It was 50 miles from home the night before and waited until Saturday morning - one long crank and then the check engine light went on. On the downside, my dealer has not yet finished the diagnosis on my car so I am still without it .

Sorry about the HPFP failure... hopefully (fingers crossed) this will be the only one, but knowing what every one else has gone threw with them ,odds are that it won't be...

I agree. The pervasiveness of this issue is ridiculous. As has been said, if BMW screws this up in its upcoming flood of TT engines, it could spell serious trouble for the brand's image.

Well Juris, at least she got you home safe before she started acting like a true bitch...lol... Hope she behaves from now on

slight OT.
Does anybody know if new TT v8 has this problem yet? I guess it's a bit early....
But I don't see how BMW can manage to have a good/working HPFP on TT v8 and not on TT I6.
I think it's only a matter of time before we hear this issue on TT V8.
Although I would love to be proven wrong.

this is a very common problem on the 3.0TT engine, welcome!, my friends 335 is in the shop at this very moment getting his 3rd fuel pump but i heard the fuel pumps are warrantied for life : ) so its all good
