BMW SA mentioned fuel injection and induction system cleaning needed to be done on my '08 550i. Necessary at 55k miles?

Hmmm, sounds kind of fishy to me.

Not sure if your 550i is direct injected like the N54 motor, but there is proof of carbon buildup on the valves in the turbo motor which needs cleaning around 50k.

Buy a bottle of Redline SI-1 Fuel System Cleaner at Pep Boys or Amazon and put it in your tank - that's all you really need at 50k. I use a bottle before every oil change (7k).

There was mention of this on this forum less than 2 weeks ago. All the dealer did was add BMW branded Techron fuel system cleaner and charged him quite a bit for it. Do a search on Techron and see.

Thanks guys. Still skeptical about it but going to give it a shot. As long as they actually do it properly instead of putting a bottle of overpriced off the shelf fuel cleaner, then it might be worth doing.

Found the service bulletin:

Unless you are having some type of perfomance issues (engine stumble, not smooth idle, or something else that points to dirty injectors), I'd save my money and drop in a bottle of techron every 5k miles.

$12 bottle treats up to 20 gallons. Just dropped in a bottle last night. Can't say that I've every noticed an difference before and after, but it makes me sleep better at night knowing I did a little preventative maintenance.
