4 times now, I've got up in the morning to find that my 530d won't start. Each time, it's because the car is out of fuel even though the fuel guage says 1/4 tank left and the range says 60-100 miles left. It isn't consistant though. In between, I can run the car to empty and still have fuel left.

Apparently the car doesn't stutter because of some syphoning effect in the tank but once it's stopped, the next time you start it, it's sucking air. BMW have replaced the fuel tank senders (there are 2 apparently) and are now planning to change the dashboard.

I can't help but feel they are just trying things in the hope that something will work.

Anybody else had a similar prob??

No I don't. Sorry to hear about the problem. With kind of transmission do you have? I think you should take your car to your local dealer so they can check it out
Good luck

Fixed, I think. The senders were sending out the correct readings for fuel, but the dash was apparently reading the correct levels, but with occasional erroneous readings. They have replaced the whole dash and (touch wood) things have been ok since.

I don't want to panic you but if I were you, I would let them check and possibly change the diesel pump also if you have started the engine with "air".
The reason is that this pump, if I have well understood, is lubrified with the diesel itself. If you make the pump running "in the air", there is no more lubrification and the mechanic of the pump may suffer...
