Being a former E46 3 Series owner; I'm well aware of the fuel gauge problem that exists on the E46. I ran out of fuel last year when my fuel gauge still said there was 1/4 tank left. It was then I realised that there was such a problem; luckily for me it was resolved after one visit to the dealer. Anyway I know several people have experienced this recently; some even after a few visits to the dealer. Not sure whether its due to the hot weather we're experiencing at the moment.

I'm now wondering whether such a problem might exist on the E60? Especially if they do use the same type of fuel sensor as the E46. Obviously I don't know whether this is true of course. I'm definitely keeping my tank topped up just in case. Not nice when you run out of fuel.

P.S. This problem won't worry the diesel owners on the forum, as they'll travel such long distances!

I have been as low as about 25miles left on the OBC, the fuel guage needle was pretty close to 0, so hopefully they rectified the problem.

I'm an adventurous type of guy who always pushes things a bit.

I haven't run out of gas (yet) but I can say that I've dropped the guage down so low that sweat beads began forming on my head!

Clearly the E46 problem doesn't exist on the E60.

YMMV! (pun intended)

I've been as low as 16 miles on the OBC ( and praying all the time that it was right )

So far so good!

I was down to 27 miles on the OBC today and then filled up the tank and it took 16.5 gallons. That seems pretty accurate.

Atta boy zippers! That's what I'm talking about!

(The E39 used to go to dashes after around 9 miles...)
