Hi ALl,

Again I am a newbie but loving the "Ulitimate Driving Experience". I have purchased an 05 525i with navi 3 weeks ago. I have been watching the computer on the mpg that I am receiveing. I was told by the dealer to drive the engine hard in the first 500 miles by switching from automatic to manual shifting. I did that. My 525 now has approximately 1100 miles and according to the computer I am only getting 21 mpg. 95% of my driving is interstate(highway). I have not switched to manual mode since reaching the 500 mile mark. I had a loaner while they installed the aux inlut and autodimming mirror/compass. It was an 04 525i with 5000 miles. THe computer was showing 29 to 30 mpg. Do I need to let in break in further to start getting the mpg that the car is rated for? Any insight is appreciated.

I find it odd that your dealer would tell you to drive it hard for the first 500 miles. The following is a quote from your owners manual:

Always obey all official speed limits.

Avoid full-throttle operation and use of the transmission's kickdown mode during these initial miles.

Once you have driven 1,200 miles/2,000 km, the engine and vehicle speeds can be gradually increased. You should also comply with these break-in procedures should the engine or differential need to be replaced at a later point.
Notice the part about using the transmission's kickdown mode. Very odd indeed your dealer would tell you these things were OK.

As for the gas mileage - I have a friend who used to have a 525 and never got over 19 mpg.

My '04 525i gets 20-21 mpg according to the onboard computer.

I have a very neat app on my Palm called "jMileage." I've used it to keep a record of every gasoline fillup on my E60 since I purchased it. It shows an overall average mileage of 18.6 for all fillups. I drive my E60 in urban conditions. I think it would likely get 24-25 mpg on the highway.

I believe the onboard computer tends to overstate the gasoline mileage.

I reset the "Trip Computer" on each gas fill-up and I have been getting between 23 and 25 on fill-ups. The onboard computer is saying a little less than 24. Most of my driving is just driving to work (highway and local).

The mpg should increase, usually about 20,000 miles the engine starts producing its 'best'. However, IMHO the 525 auto is a little underpowered and the auto saps quite a bit of economy... Ironically a slightly more powerful engine can be more efficient. The new 2.5 engine improves matters and it's lighter too!

Using the manual mode can optimise economy but you have to think about every change I rarely use M unless I'm gunning it - not economy focused!

Told by the dealer to drive it hard your first 500 miles? Ummmm your not suppose to rev the engine high for the first couple thousand miles if you REALLY want to be cautious. Who the hell would recommend driving like its Nascar your first 500 miles?????

Want good gas mileage? Dont drive fast

I used to average 28-29 mostly highway driving. Ever since I received the 13.3 upgrade as part of the recall I average far less 22-24. Has anyone else noticed this?

Have you checked if they messed up and programmed your car to calculate it in Euro Gallons instead of US Gallons? are you getting less by hand calculation or just by OBC?
