Fuel Consumption
Pictures paint a thousand words....
The first one was just as I came to a standstill in a holdup (no black arrows as the TMC hadn't picked it up), having been driving for a while at a steady 60-70 mph in moving, but heavy traffic
The second one was when I came off the motorway, and went to a shop....
Mine has just hit 10,000 miles on the ODO and still feels like it's not fully run in...
Mine over reads by approx 4%, so just do the math...the first one is 57.6mpg (ave speed 59.7mph), and the 2nd one is 56.5 (ave speed 56.6mph) before calculation for those who aren't registered on this forum. This was on a total journey of 120 miles or so - approx 15% Urban Roads and 90% A road and Motorway...
Anyone beat that?

Very impressive.......
Cant get close to that, I can give an equally good in its own right 45.7mpg tho, can't be bad with a nearly 280bhp motor weighing 1750kg's ( My car has 80k on the clock now if that makes a difference ? )
Mine was run from London to Lincolnshire via Central London , M11, A1, 80 most of the way on the clear roads
To put this in perspective......
My old 2001 E46 320d ( Pre facelift / Pre Common rail ) which was chipped gave a very best of 43mpg driven exactly the same, that car weighed 1550kg and had around 165bhp - 175bhp. I know my weights cos I weighed both cars on the local builders merchant weight bridge
Talk about progress moving on eh

wow!!!
i got a 2005 d msport auto and i cant get no where near that at all!!!
motorway i get about 42mpg (70mph avarage) and on the road 23mpg (16mph average) that about 340-360 miles on average per tank!! if 20% is motorway and 80% is normal.
i sure there is something wrong with mine, i've asked the question loads of times but no one seems to know excatly what it may be, do you?
my mate says its cus ive have 20" rims on it but it shouldnt really make that much difference should it?

Firstly I would say your 20" rims could be messing with onboard computer, as your rollling radius is probably incorrect.
The only way to accurately measure your true consumption is to fill it tank to tank and work it about, just remember 4.54 litres per gallon ( not US gallon btw )
Also I would check your settings in Idrive to make sure your not running US Gallons on the computer.
I can manage 40mpg pretty easy on local running around, 6 mile trip each way to drop my daughter to Nursery every morning for example, really crappy kinda run for this kinda car
I have definately improved my driving style with this car, I tend to squirt it briskly up to the speed I wanna do rather than just gently going up there, definately better on fuel that way for me at least. ( I dont mean foot to the floor either )
Finaly, check your tyre pressures.

I'm sure "LCI" adds about 5-8 MPG - or maybe it's the "detuned" 3.0lD -
Dunno - either way, I'm pleased as punch!
Mark - you're absolutely right about getting "there" quickly. I do the same (unless it is a totally cold start first thing - in which case I like to let the oil get to the top of the engine first...) - and even use manual Steptronic changes occasionally to get to a good gear/speed combo quickly. That helps a lot in town. I can actually get to an OBC claimed 33-35mpg without much bother like that.
I have a very gentle driving style, and once managed to get just over 800 miles out of 63.8 litres of derv in my Audi A4 130 PDi - over 57mpg actual...where the Trip computer stated 62mpg.
PS - keep the AC off, windows up and tyre pressure over inflated by 1-2PSI - it all helps a lot!

thanks for the reply
the rolling radius is correct, the size of the wheel is correct because ASC e60 have 20 inch rims on them too, and i have had the same size put on, so they should be bang on.
the first thing i did was check the idrive set up and that correct too, and i have checked the tyre pressure to that cool aswell.
on a full tank i get about 350 miles until the comp says that i need to fill up again, 66-67 litres of fuel.
any other ideas????

MAF ( Air flow meter ) mate.......a common failure which could cause shocking fuel consumption mate, assuming your filters are all up to date etc ??

ECU remapped by ZipTuning to 260+bhp.
Got about 13km/l yesterday (7.7l/100km which is just over 30 mpg US or 37 mpg UK) doing between 140 and 150 km/h (about 90mph) with some heavy acceleration on the highway.
Not too bad for a car that has more than 260bhp

hi mate could you expand on this topic for me, where can i find the air flow meter, is something i can diagnose myself?
Its a unit which sits in front of your air filter about the size of a large fist, it sense the temperature of the air coming into the car and adjusts the fuel/air mixture to suit, if the car is getting the wrong signals then it could be running too rich all the time and making your FC really bad, also potentially dropping your power.
They cost around ?230 gbp, always use a genuine BOSCH unit, never a cheapy off ebay or similar.
A diagnostic at your main stealers CAN detect a knackered MAF, but not always, they will only detect a completely knackered one, not one which is simply working "out of range", the most common way of recognising whats gone wrong is to remove the lead going into the MAF, this will revert the ECU to factory default mode, safe defaults, if the car feels quicker, has better fuel economy with lead disconnected then your MAF is almost certainly knackered.
Will try and find some pics for you highlighting what you need to look for....
