Sounds like I need to get it checked out by the dealer. They are so unhelpful. I cannot even get them to tell me which ProgMan version is installed without paying ?25 for them to plug it in to find out. They look at me as if it shouldn't concern me.

I had a 530d hire car for a few weeks and I was getting a 36mpg average compared to a 32 mpg ave I get from my 535d and a 31 mpg average I got from a pre lci 525d hire car.

If you're getting mid twenties and its not all urban driving I suggest there may be something a miss as all those figs. I quoted above were with a fairly heavy right foot with brim to brim calcs in UK gallons.

As for you Progman version, you can check yourself via the hidden menu screen.
Do a search for "hidden menu" on here and there will be a few posts showing how the hidden menu screen can be accessed.

Don't hold your breath.

The method is not foolproof and is less accurate with newer Progman versions.

Also this technique doesn't work equally well on both M-ASK and CCC based systems.

My 2004 530D Sport is giving 19MPG or roughly 280 miles to a tank. This is ALL town driving with cold starts and short journeys.

On a long motorway run around 80mph it is averaging 40mpg or around 570 miles

Conclusion - BMW Autos + Town Driving = Big Bucks

At only 19mpg around town I wish i'd gone for the 535d.. cant be any worse surely??

This mirrors my current driving and your results are even worse! Great, I don't have to visit the nonchalant BMW dealer.
I'm looking forward to giving it a proper run with motorway speeds at the legal limit. My previous Bristol motorway run was possibly over the legal limit, giving a lower mpg figure.

That's 570 miles for 70, or 65, or 60 litres, or thereabouts!
It's inadvisable to run a diesel close to empty.

Come on, "brim to brim" is the only worthwhile calculation.

I tend to use the "accrued range" idea which, using a zeroised odometer on fillup, I add the current distance travelled at any time to the remaining range.

Using that method I get "up to" 575/600 miles per tank if mainly motorway, 500 miles mixed and down to 400 if mainly city.

My 2c.

ABC
Same here - including ranges, though I never managed to see a "600+" range indicated (range + trip). 580 is the max I got it to.

(sorry - posted when ABC's post was the last post, but got out of sequence, hence later edit to add original quote)

I have now put 4,800km on my 530d (it already had 32.5k on it when I collected it on March 20th this year), and have averaged 36.64 mpg (computed brim-to-brim). My normal running of the car is 50% motorway + 30% city + 10% windy country roads, although a healthy portion of the motorway time is spent sitting in bumper-to-bumper crawls. Stats are as follows:

Average: 36.64mpg / 7.71 litres/100km
Worst: 32.27 mpg / 8.75 litres/100km
Best: 40.45 mpg / 6.98 litres/100km

I'd also note that the "best" figure shown above was achieved while driving through Switzerland last weekend, on motorways, averaging about 70mph with a lot of climbing up and rolling down mountains (was crossing the Alps south-north).

I'm averaging 680km or so per fillup, which I think is great considering that I always fill the car up when the fuel gauge needle gets just below the last quarter marker - not wise to run diesels right down.

I've got a pretty detailed spreadsheet going an am more than willing to share - PM me if interested, but I must warn you that it's in litres, litres/100km, etc. (although there is an MPG calculation there too).

All of this has me pretty happy, other than the fact that my wife seems to also be able to do what ABC's wife can ...

My wife can magic 10mpg more than me out of my 535d without any apparent delay to our arrival time even on a long journey.

She says she just tries to keep the "econometer" needle to the left as much as possible.

Bugger!

ABC
... and that really get's me. I definitely does boil down to how you drive the thing.
