There is no need to shout.
Remember what we were saying about spending money on an e60 and repairing runflats...

I have just purchased a used E61 auto with 88k showing. Love the car but am only getting 26mpg!!!

Been into my local dealers (Knights North Staffs) who had the car for 48hrs, test drove the car on the first day, said it was ok (but could not tell me over what distance) asked if they could fill it up, and take for a longer test, refill and report back. Collected the next day and told that they had forgot had done nothing to the car.

It has since been into Knights South Staffs for 3 days, who tell me that they achieved 32mpg after resetting everything, only took the car for 14 miles, refused to have the car for a week at my expense and use the car on a daily basis to get an accurate mpg.

Has anyone had the same problems with mpg and poor service?

My record is 1.190 km (739 miles) with a full tank (highways in belgium & France - average speed = 142 KM/H = 87,6 mph). This is just over 40mpg ... ! You can't beat a diesel for that !

Thanks for the info, the car is driving on country lanes with an average speed of 36mph.

I have driven this car using the manual side of the auto box, resetting the obc and driving in an agressive style, result 26mpg.

The car came back down the motorway, again resetting the obc, doing a steady 65-70 in an relaxed style, the result 26mpg!!!

If the dealer states that the car does not show any mechanical defects, what sort of equipment are they using that tells them that?
Is it called a Doris Stokes machine?

OK, you do have a point, if the consumption does not improve at all. I'd say 26 is OK for the first type of drive, but not the second. If it's any help, Rydale Central in Birmingham were pretty good when I last visited them; perhaps getting a second opinion?

Have you spotted any leaks or stains under the car? I'm wondering if perhaps there is a fuel line leak?

Does the car smoke at all?

My wife can magic 10mpg more than me out of my 535d without any apparent delay to our arrival time even on a long journey.

She says she just tries to keep the "econometer" needle to the left as much as possible.

Bugger!

No smoke has been reported, and no leaks. As for the history, if this might help, the turbo was replaced in Feb 06 (Before I owned the car at a cost of ?3000) could this have damaged the injectors/bores??

Tony,

For my tuppence worth, I'd be disappointed with 26 mpg too. My E60 530d Manual is averaging mid to high 30's in varied driving. I haven't done many significant long runs, but those that I have done I get high 30's cruising in the 80's. My E46 330d Touring was getting around 5mpg more, so I too was disappointed until I slapped myself and realised that the E60 was sooo much better, sooo much faster and sooo much more comfortable. Not much room for the dog though. The other replacement choice was a V70 T5. I just can't imagine how I would face the fuel (and tyre) bills in that!

As for dealers in this area - shop around. Servicing costs vary as much as ?70 within a 35 mile radius of Stoke. I can't comment on Knights as I haven't used them (always too dear!!) I've had reasonable service from Blue Bell at Crewe and Rydale at Shrewsbury, although neither has been exemplary. Maybe try an Indie for fault diagnosis, but keep to the dealers for the all-important stamp in the book???

Above all, enjoy the drive!!

My E61 530D auto averages around 31 mpg. As low as 22 around town and up to 45 on a run.

But there are many variables, how hard you accelerate, road and traffic conditions, tyre pressures, what load you carry.

One tank of fuel is useless as a guide, the refill is just not accurate enough.

You would need to check the consumption over at least a thousand miles to get a realistic view of it's overall consumption, (preferably 2,000) but the variables still apply.

Not per se, I don't think, but why did the turbo go, I wonder? However a leaky/out of trim injector should a) be reported through the engine diagnostic, and b) cause some smoke. If the bore(s) had enough damage to affect consumption, your compression ratio would be shot, and you'd have noticeable starting problems, especially in winter. Plus, again, smoke (this time from oil leaking through). Unless the particulate filter is SO good...

Did the SA at Knights tell you they did run a diagnostic check? It may be worthwhile having a look at the printout from that.

If you're getting 26mpg @ 65-70mph then something is definitely wrong! Mine would give at least 50% better than that without even trying! If I feather the throttle over quite a few miles I can get over an indicated 50mpg...
