I've just noticed this today and i was abit surprised. While stationary, if i turn the steering wheel from lock to lock , the nose of the car goes up and down depending the position of the wheels. We are talking about a good inch of movement that i can notice on the bonnet !

Does anybody have a clue why this is happening ie anything to do with active suspension ?

This is to get better handling and responsiveness. As far as I know only Mercedes and BMW has this feature, and basically the front wheels do not turn only but also lean like a motorcycle towards to the direction you are turning the wheels.

It's called caster. It produces a jacking effect which changes load on each contact patch. It also winds on more camber the more you turn the wheel, thus standing the front of the car up on the shoulder of the tyre.

You can ready about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caster_angle

Even if your car does have active suspension, it would be dormant becuase the car is stationary.

All cars do this, the more caster, the more it does it.
