My Ride: 520d LCI, old engine, manual, black dakota, platingrau II, standard (242?) rims.

I have a 520d LCI from 04-2007. I noticed that the front brake discs rust on the outer edge, a circle of around 3 mm. The rust does not clear after driving, as it does on the largest part of the surface.
The full surface of the rear brakes is nice and shining; without any rust edge.
Should I consider this to be normal?

Note: my warranty is running out in 2 months' time...

if your warranty is out in 2 mo., take it to the dealer and have them change the pads and rotors.

Its just where tha pad isnt in contact with the disc so the rust cant be rubbed off. Its normal. You should still have another year left on your warranty and if its the same as BMW UK wouldnt cover that anyway.

Thanks for the reassurance that its normal.

So warranty lasts 3 years in UK? I'm currently living in the Netherlands, but I bought the car when I was living in Belgium. I assumed I only have two years' of warranty, but come to think of it, I'm not sure.

It's a 2-year warranty here in NL, but do check whether brakes are included in there as they are considered "consumables", i.e. items that wear with use. I believe only our American cousins get things like these covered under their warranties.

One more thing: I use Hans Severs in Alphen a/d Rijn and they offered to do something called a pre-warranty-end checkup on my car (my Huisselectie warranty runs out exactly a month from today) next week, giving sufficient time to order and instal any needed parts before the warranty actually dies. May well be worth checking if your dealer will do the same. Hans Severs also have a branch in Woerden which, if I recall right from our past messaging, may not be that far away from you.

This has been discussed on this site for some 3 years +.

The hubs tend the rust and the discs rust at once after
a good solvent wash.

Very normal, some have even painted their hubs fore looks.

That's a different issue. I know about hubs and the disc rusting I talked about is only about the outer edge - which on my front brakes remains rusted after a drive. That I couldn't find anywhere

If you don't keep the car in a garage it is normal.
Mine isn't rusted indeed, but when I leave it outside in the mountains rotors rust.
