Default Friends 335i Water Pump = poop

So my friend was driving his 335i (N54 Engine) on the highway last week and check engine light comes on, a few seconds later his car shuts down. He pulls over to the side of the road and calls a tow truck. An indy mechanic diagnoses the vehicle and recognizes the water pump as being bad.

His vehicle has 60k-65k miles, seems like a pretty common thing for the water pump to be going out around this mileage on these vehicles. Why wouldn't there be any kind of recall on them if this is the case? My vehicle is pushing closer and closer towards 60k miles and I am definitely not looking forward to burning my $$$ on replacing it, just another cost of owning a bimmer I guess.

BMW water pumps have had service life of about 60,000 miles since like, forever. As much as BMW would like to think their water pumps last longer, they really don't. Funny that you started this thread, as I am literally about to head into the garage tonight to start replacing the water pump on my car. It hasn't failed, but I'm not going to tempt fate.

Yep, you're one of the lucky ones. Wish I had your luck with water pumps. I just changed mine out at 96K. As far as I can tell, it was original. I lost two early on my E30 and changed out more than I care to remember on E36s that didn't even make it to 50K. At least they started making the impellers out of metal. I'm sure there are those that disagree with me, but I just don't trust those things anymore.

Yes I'm going with metal when that time comes. Too much brittle plastic on the important parts of these vehicles. last year had a tiny pinhole in the E46 expansion tank on the under side where the smaller diameter hose connects to it. couldn't figure it out where the coolant was leaking. Had the same thing with a water pipe coming into the house. A schedule-40 PVC pipe gets a pinhole somehow and don't find it until the entire lawn (neighbors too) was flooded. Plastic can be nice when done right. It's all around us, just chalk it up to a freak accident. I suspect it had an air bubble that passed QA.
But back to subject. I think all BMWs are a hit or miss. lol. I have good luck, a friend does, but his wife didn't and I hear it all the time from people as well.

Overall I've had really good luck with them over the years too. I'm sure I'm a bit jaded after working in a shop for a bit out of college. BMW cooling systems kept my rent paid for about 30 months, so I guess I should be thankful
