SUCCESS!
A very sharp SA at Bridgeport BMW in Bridgeport, CT showed me how:
1. With driver's door open, and radio off, insert key (or fob) in ignition. Do not start engine.
2. After a second or two, the key icon will appear in the warning screen and the gong will begin to chime.
3. Turn the radio volume knob to adjust the sound of the gong.
THAT'S IT!!!
They tell you to RTFM, but this isn't in TFM. Go figure.
So that's my contribution to the forum.
First, kudos to CTYankee for his input. However, on my '08 at least, this method would only let me go louder. It seems it's already at the lowest volume from the factory.

This chime saved me a few times. I would not lower it, does not bother me.

I was excited to hear this but alas it did not work on my car. Volume would not go down or up.
