It's weird that my CRV and 545i has this problem, but my C240 and previous Audi A6, and 328i never have this problem. I live in Los Angeles.
My 545i has by far, the worst smell of all the cars I've owned. I can fart in the car after a nice bean meal and no one would complain because the AC odor usually out-smell it.
It is possible to recreate this smell precisely. Just let a couple of oranges rot for 4 weeks. When it gets moldy and soft, crack them open and take a deep breath. My AC smells exactly like that. You guys without the AC odor should try this sometimes. It builds character...

Worked at an Audi, Porsche, Chevrolet dealer for a couple of years (Asst Svc Mgr) and it is something that occurs on ALL makes and models.
We even had a can of special spray from Audi that we were instructed to use (the whole can) in this situation.
One method that often worked would be to park car in driveway with engine running, open all windows and turn the heater to max heat and max fan. Make sure AC is OFF.
This seemed to dry out and kill the offending mold
Another method you could try is to get a can of neutral smelling Lysol and turn off AC and just have fan on lowest setting. Spray a bunch of the stuff into the air intakes for the ventilation system for about 20 seconds or so and shut it off. Leave overnight and then try the max heat method above.

Just got mine back after having the A/C cleaned with the BMW recommended Wynn's Aircomatic device. Totally odor free for a couple of days but today the odor started creeping back. I read a while back in Roundel that a coating for the evaporator coil is being developed.
Regarding other cars, I have not noticed the odor after extensive A/C use in an '05 Camry which I drove in Florida for a week, last week. BMW needs to stop dodging this issue with their "environmental" excuse (I heard that one too, from the BMW area rep) and get this problem resolved.
I am otherwise very satisfied with my '05 545, after a horrible experience with an '04 530, which BMW bought back.
