So I get the "coolant low" warning today when I start the car. Just curious. Who would go to dealership without appointment?

My dealer has always been accomodating in terms of top offs. Never called for appt, just pulled up and they would top off at no charge...

Since my e60 is relatively young if a low-fluid warning should appear I'm concerned about a leak or system failure.

Here's a tip I've found very helpful.

I don't carry a camera everywhere I go. So, I have used my cell phone (now there is a device that is more than a "phone") to take a quick picture. It's proved very helpful to document transient system messages. It also has video capability.

I have even printed the pics to show a service adviser and have been told - "This is very helpful" because we don't have to have the problem repeat itself or hope that the on-board electronics have stored some data.

GO TO THE DEALER! Unless you figure you didn't pay enough for your BMW!

My dealer put water in my my bro's 530i when he asked for a top off. The adviser said that they use a highly concentrated coolant and using water to top it off is ok. Sounds fishy to me. Can anyone confirm this?

It's not fishy ... but it is lazy or cheap or both.

Coolant protection will be reduced if it is diluted further with water. IMHO, it sould have beep topped off with premixed coolant / (distilled) water.

IMO, premixed coolant should be used at least not just water alone!
