This is my 3rd Beemer and all have had "soft" windshields. Curious if this "feature" may be some sort of trade-off, perhaps, regarding windshield 'crash integrity' in lieu of chip resistance...?

i agree with the windshield being too soft. mine has too many pits for 65K

+1 on the mats too. i would replace them if there was a good aftermarket that fit?

Try these... my dad got them for his E34 and they were excellent. Much more durable and higher quality than whats in the E60. This was like 2 years ago though... But I doubt they'll decrease the quality... *shrugs*

On the left navagation pane
Goto Interior > Floor Mats > Plus Floor Mats.

Now I actually notice they have "Ultimate" floor mats... sounds like those are even better...

The windshield issue is a concession to safety. Mine busted within 3,000 miles of highway driving.

I upgraded to the ultimate mats. Much better and lifetime warranty. My factory mats started to show wear in a couple thousand miles where the heel of my shoe sits between the gas pedal and brake.

I agree that the windshield on my 550i shows some small chips after about 17,000 miles of driving. On the other hand, it could be much worse. I had an Audi A6 4.2 and the glass in the windshield on that car was so soft I sometimes thought that a bug hitting the glass at highway speed would cause a chip. It got so bad that it affected my visibility and I had the windshield replaced. The glass on my e-60 is head and shoulders better than the Audi was - no comparison.

I'm sure you're correct. It's somewhat akin to the watches I work on. The crystals or "glass" come in three basic types: plexiglass, which will scratch easily but won't shatter; mineral, which will scratch with some force and will shatter only with a great deal of pressure; and sapphire, which will not scratch, but will shatter much more easily. It's all a trade-off. I suppose BMW makes the windshields to chip (or crack if the force is there) rather than shatter, both for safety and replacement reduction.

I would fully concur regarding the windshield mine is very pitted after 37K of driving and as I drive into the sun going to work or home it can be very annoying. That said Im sure its a trade-off to shattering glass although a plastic film is sandwiched in laminate glass to stop this happening.
Carpet mats are lightweight but I use rubber mats over these in the winter as beige is not practical in bad weather all of this however is more than made up for with a great car BMW simply make the best diesel powerplants.

My friend has a 2006 325I. His winshield cracked once at 29500 miles. He has recently replaced it with a new one purchased at BMW and installed there. Guess what! Two weeks after it cracked again! Are they installing some kind of the cheap shit? Not a very good expirience...

Mine gave big crack just by sitting in garage.. I think it couldnt stand 20F cold weather.. Still debating to see if BMW Warranty will fix it or have to deal with ALLSTATE insurance
