Fitting larger exhaust tip on a smaller diameter pipe

I've read some where awhile ago about a member fitting 545i exhaust tips on a 530i. Can someone chime in on how to make the exhaust tip stay in place? Obviously the tips are larger in diameter and do not clamp on to the pipes. Do I need to weld or drill any holes and maybe keep in place with a steel rivet?
