Well for the 1st time in 10 years i've needed a recovery truck.

The car cutting out at 80mph on the outside lane of the motorway is NOT what i expect from a 17,000 mile 5 series! To be fair to BMW they were great with the recovery and loan car but i really shouldn't have needed them.

4 days and one DME later i'm on the move again.

Sorry to hear that buddy! However you never know with any cars. DOesnt matter if they are $10k or $150k, sometimes electro-mechanical units fail. Reminds me of someone I was driving next to on the highway here in NYC... The guy had the new Bentley GT Coupe. I was admiring it for at least 2 miles as we were driving next to eachother. All of a sudden the car starts jerking and he pulls over. About 40 minutes later on my return trip as im driving on the opposite side of the highway I see a flatbed and a Benz S class. The bentley was being loaded on the flatbed and the guy must have had a family member or freind come pick him up. Oh and might I add the car looked brand-spankin new! Like it was said "Shit Happens".

In another instance, when I purchased my e39 back on a Friday in 1998 I had the car and put 1000 miles on it first weekend. By the time Monday came along, my sister seen some greenish fluid on the driveway as I was pulling out. Later I had a steering issue. This is 3 days later and my steering pump failed. As a note, I never had an issue since then...well except for suspension which was indeed all my fault, but that another story!

When my E60 was towed, it was the first time ever for me one of my car was towed (except a rallye car I put in a ditch...). Quite embarrasing fror BMW...

its pretty crap when it happens especially when its a car of this cost. IT happened not so long ago with my dads porsche. He blasted away from the lights passing everyone and then about 200feet down the road one of the engine management sensors got chopped off by the flywheel or somesuch (they had remounted the engine and had not fastened one of the bolts on). Basically the sensor told the car where everything was positioned. Dash lit up like a christmas tree and we had to push it off the road and wait for a recover vehicle for 3 hours.

This was new years eve too...quite embarassing..

I had to have my e39 towed at about 15,500 miles. The car just lost power and acted like the exhaust was plugged. I had to limp off the road and wait in a car park late at night for an hour with all types of freaks driving by. They fixed the car in less than a day and told me it was a sensor problem. When I went to pick it up I asked a tech whom I knew and he told me that it wasnt a sensor but a plug on a sensor that was damaged during my last oil change.
