If you focus on the E39, you may want to get a 530i 2002 as this is the latest generation of that engine. most issues as mentioned in this thread are no problem on that car. It drives nicer than the v8, consumes less and is the final generation of that engine series. 80k is not an issue on that one. Of course, maintenance must have been done correctly but that goes for all cars.

pixel failure is shared with many bmw's (even the 8series) and can be a costly thing to have done at a dealer. Have a look around the internet (esp. german sites) and you get a good picture of what is and what is no longer an issue.

as for the E39 vs E60, well that's a personal thing I guess. I prefer the E39 so I'm looking for a 530i Touring even though (or perhaps because) I drive an E60 daily without too many problems mentioned on this forum. It just doesn't 'click' with this car as I did with the E39.

Thanks guys. I will also post this over on the e39 board as suggested. The price is $15,999. Here is a link: http://www.cucarfinders.com/detail-2002-bm...0i-3144971.html.

For right now, the e60 is a bit out of my price range. And I really love this body style. I will do a search for a 530i as well.

looks pretty.

some marks of things like remote garage door control but not in irrepairable places.

typical wear spots are looking fine for that mileage.

get the technical tests done and get the service history if possible where you live. that tells how it was used/maintained and what has been done (or not).

I had a 2002 E39 530i and in the short time I had it, it still had the cooling system and front suspension issues as my earlier E39 528i. It had only done 100,000 kms, (62,000 miles) when I bought it. The E39 540s actually had greater stresses on the cooling system than the I6's had. But look, I have read owner experiences where their E39 540's have been generally good.

For 3 grand more, you can have this Bangled Beauty of a 745i from Major Motors in Santa Monica (I bought a car from them a couple years ago - they keep tip-top cars from Beemers to Bentleys).

I had a '99 540i/6 M-Sport and it was just costing me too much in maintenance...I sold it and jumped into the E60 ... it was damn good car though....
