First Oil Change?
#1
Hey guys, this may sound like a real stupid question, but when did you guys get your first oil change when you bought your car. I have an 09' 535 and I just hit 5000 miles and the Idrive hasn't prompted me to change oil yet. However, my friend told me that you should change your oil at 5k miles. So i was curious whether you guys when you guys had your oil changed. Thank you for your time.

I did my first at 2K miles.... then 5K miles... after that, every 5K miles.
Some people think this is is overkill. But I like to work on my car and every 5K is very easy to remember.
I did the same to my 2002 e39 540i. The engines runs perfect when I sold it at 170K miles. Did an oil analyze from a lab around 150K and all number is good too.

Find the e-mail of Mike Miller, columnist for Bimmer magazine. Write to him and ask him to e-mail the pdf file of his essay on the "old fashioned maintenance schedule" for BMW's. He claims that the maintenance that BMW's used to need, they still do - it's just marketing that has the company recommending no maintenance until way beyond when the maintenance should be done.
Anyway, Mike recommends doing the first oil and filter change at 1200 miles, because that's the end of the break-in period, and every oil he's ever seen at that mileage contains tiny pieces of metal - a normal occurrence with the break-in of a new engine. He makes this recommendation in order to make it more likely that the car's engine lasts 200k miles or more.
I have the same car as you (2009 535i). I just changed my oil and filter @ 1400 miles. IMHO, go change your oil and filter now. Better now than waiting till 15k miles. With the synthetic oil, 7500 miles between oil changes should be fine, from what I understand.
Glad that I, a newbie member of this group, can give out advice, as well as receive it from this generous group.
best,
kpp

Did you seriously resurrect a 3 year old thread??? Really?
I think 5k-7500k is good between changes... 15k is way too high IMO.
