Well its taken a month, 3 visits and an alot of arguing with incompitant staff (for over an hour at one point) to get them to code the mp3 functionality. 
But it finally plays mp3s and I have now installed the Dension 500 using the DIY instructions posted here and upgraded the firmware on it to the latest one, just for good measure. All working nicely and showing the text on the screen
just need to decide where to route the cables to 
Does anyone have the UK BMW HQ address as their website wants me to fill in a form or ring them, but I would prefer to write to them...

you can also email them through the bmw.co.uk website, thats what i did when i complained about my dealer, got a nice new aliminium dvd suround panel from them
