I have yet to see an E60 in person or in photos that doesn't have the shark fin antenna.
I would be willing to bet that all the antennae for all possible car systems are pre-installed into the fin on _every_ E60, and it's just the controlling hardware that is installed as-needed into customer ordered cars. Antennas and cabling are the cheapest part of the systems involved.

The sharkfin atennae is for the radio + possibly GPS/etc
It's now standard on 3 and 5 series BMW's. According to my dealer, this was because it became too expensive to replace broken rear windscreens with embedded antennas (like in the older 3 series)

actually, mrbelk, i've seen loads of photos sans fin... some here on the site, even a recent thread re:wheels has photos of a black e60 with no fin antenna
