thats what it looked like. There was 2 identical black sections on each side. The one on the left had the 2 fuel pipes. thats were we drained it from. We did not bother to check the other side because it all drained out from that side. It could not be the fuel tank.

That sounds interesting. Rudy ? Have you seen anything about the fuel tank(s) in the TIS ? Just for curiosity ?

I've heard that the E46 3 series has 2 fuel tanks, so I guess it would be the same for the E60. As you may or may not know, there's well known fuel sensor problem on the E46s. I ran out of fuel one time because of that problem when I had my 325iSE.
Anyway I've known several people experiencing the same problems of running out of fuel more than one time. On one occasion the problem was due to a "fuel pump" sending fuel from one tank to another that failed. That meant there were two tanks.

It maybe false information but that's what I heard.

Maybe having 2 tanks helps in BMW's perfect 50:50 weight distribution???

Maybe the reserve really is that - a real reserve tank.

Here is a TIS document explaining how to drain the fuel tank on the 525d:

(I told you to use a siphon from the filler nozzle! )

Here's a document explaining how to remove the tank on a 525d (so that you can see where the tank is, etc.):

I was posting them at Iceman's request...

(Although I did hint about the siphon method prior to your "draining!")

Glad you got it all sorted out.
