At Mercedes this service was free, under Mobilolife. GBP 400 seems excessive. Especially since the other way around would be worse.
Not to add insult to injury, but remember that Golf commercial, with the exorcist music..
There was somebody a while ago that proposed to make nozzles a certain shape, so you cannot make this mistake. For exapmle square nozzle for unleaded, triangular for diesel. Seems to make sense.

I think any garage can drain it out for 95%. After draining it fill it up with diesel to the top and that won't harm the engine. I've heard tips of using a little petrol in the winter to keep the diesel more fluid.

Filling a petrol car with diesel is far worse than filling a diesel car with petrol. The diesel fuel is much thicker and will stick to all the filters and all the way through the engine.
Like someone said here.. it's recomended in cold weather to add about 5 litters of petrol to 65 of diesel fuel in order to start better.
Anyway.. if you manage to gett off the tank all the petrol and then just fill up with diesel would be just fine. You can do that at any garrage I think. You can do it yourself... but I dont know exactly how a BMW tank is made. It might require to be detached from the car to empty...

That does not seem right to me. Sure enough the petrol will burn, but a 50/50 mix will not give your engine enough lubrication. Did you start the car after you filled it up with petrol?

i drove the car about 100 yards and then parked up. I was told to drain the diesel out, clean the diesel pump, injector pump and that will be fine.

That sounds more logical. Drain the petrol out, fill up with diesel and let it run for a bit. After the petrol is out of the system you should be fine.
