Sorry to hear of your misfortune. But if I see someone selling some e60 side mirrors on ebay and they're from your area, that person may be the culprit. 
Or maybe this is a sign from a greater power advising you to get the M5 side mirrors.

they actually do that in airport parking lots too.. steal radios.. parts off newer cars.. and sell them on craigslist AND ebay.. this i know for a fact.. and worse is its by the people that work at the airport.. high incidence at kennedy.. watch out new yorkers..
