What model do you have. I know on my 05 530 I didn't have to remove anything. It took me no more than 5 mins to do. I do remember I was out of state when I changed it so I had no tools.

I have the N52k engine (year 2010, model 528i).

It was impossible to do this job without removing the entire throttle body.

The gas vent valve vacuum hose connects to the intake manifold (behind the throttle body).

Oh ok. The M54 setup was different. The good thing is you go it changed out. Is your code gone now.

Regarding if the fault code is now gone after replacing the gas ventilation valve, I think we'll have to wait a few weeks.

In the past, the CEL would come on every 3 weeks or so.

I just replaced the gas ventilation valve yesterday so we'll have to wait awhile.

However, when ISTA told me originally the fault code was 2a16, my guess was the gas ventilation valve could be malfunctioning.

That was because when I ran the ISTA evap test routine using my laptop, the test took about 2 minutes and I could hear the dmtl pump operating at the right rear tire. I assumed the dmtl pump was not the problem.

I'm working on the premise, since the car is 10 years old the gas ventilation valve is leaking gas fumes? I could be wrong.

If the CEL goes on again in a few weeks I think I'm forced to do a 'smoke' test and I'm not too excited about creating a smoke device.

If you have an issue just buy one. I will find a link to a good company. They are fairly inexpensive compared to a mechanic shop device. They are good to have just in case also.

Smoke-Tek is the company. The sale on Amazon also I believe.

Good work.

$68 dollars isn't too pricey (knowing I won't be using it too often).

Did the code ever come back after replacing the vent valve? I’m having the same issues

The fault code never came back after I replaced the fuel ventilation valve under the intake manifold.

If it did come back, my next move was to replace the dmtl pump and black rubber grommet in the right rear wheel well.

Here's some fun facts if you are going to change the fuel ventilation valve:

- pull out the air box, throttle body boot and the throttle body
- have throttle body clean on hand and clean the throttle body
- save some time and use wire snips to break the vent valve hose fitting connected to the intake (or you'll kill yourself trying to get it off)
- order a new green throttle body gasket and have it ready
- there's a lot of oil in the intake. Get some paper towels and clean it all out
- when you remove the old valve don't disturb the bend in the hose
- now align the old valve with the new valve and make sure the bends in the hose are identical

Next:

You will replace the fuel ventilation valve blind. You can try to use a mirror to check it out beforehand, but you won't be able to hold a mirror while you do this job.

I did the entire job with my eyes closed just feeling all the parts. I wish I didn't have to, but that's the way it is.

Awesome! You’re a life saver. I had already replaced the DMTL pump and a couple of other parts and still the same code. Hopefully this fixes my issue. Thanks for the tips brotha
