Extended Warranty-- Worth It?
Hi Follow Members,
I'm considering the purchase of an extended warranty for my 2006 550i w/ 147k miles. I just spent $4k on new alternator, new valve stem seals, new front pads/rotors, new vacuum pump, and new gaskets at upper timing covers, valve covers and alternator bracket. CPO warranty installed new tranny at 100k. Looks and runs great! I plan to keep for another 3 years or so. Can I buy an extended warranty at this point? If so, what is the approx. cost? And should I do so? I would appreciate any comments you have.
Happy Motoring!

When I was shopping for an extended warranty at 56,000 miles, they quoted me around $6,000. Shop around and see if it's worth it.
From what you have already replaced, your car should be trouble free for another 3-4 years.

If you can afford it just having the peace of mind would be worth it. I have extended for another couple years and it helps me sleep better at night.

Endurance Insurance. 855-765-9389. They offer a pretty strong policy for cars w/ less than 150k miles-- called the "Extra-Supreme" policy (sounds like a burger....) They quoted me $4989 for a 5 year/100k mile warranty. Pretty comprehensive coverage, including "seals and gaskets". And it includes rental car for repairs that take longer than a day. And road side service. Transferable for $50/fee. $498/now. And $249/mo for 18 months. I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT THIS LONG AGO!
Now, after all I have fixed out of pocket, I think it's a bad bet. And routine maintenance is not covered (brakes, tires, oil, battery, ect.) I think I'm going to pass....

And Carchex just quoted me $3722 for 5yrs/100k. Not as comprehensive as Endurance-- but still good. BTW, the seals and gaskets may be covered as part of a repair-- not just for leaks. Not sure. Your results may vary! And these policies are apparently not offered in CA...
