Is the extended warranty[not the routine service one] worth it?

Supposedly it is 2y or 200,000 miles and excludes things like

cd,interior trim, hoses and belts. Is about 2.5k approx.?

Surely in the US you have quite a market in independant warranties?

In the UK a warranty from www.warrantydirect.co.uk which has a very good reputation, would cost ?422 ($734) per year for a 2005 530D.

Shop around for a better quote.

I have the factory BMW extended warranty and service maintenance to 100K and it is NOT worth it. Currently at 64K miles, I just found out that software upgrades are not covered by the warranty unless a part needs replacing. What good is a warranty on a car that requires software upgrades all the time and does not cover them? So basically, unless I pay for it, my car will never have the latest software version. Wanna buy a 530?

Thanks for the info Sam530. Although my warranty will last for another 3.5 more years, but I will remind myself to get last CIP upgrade before the warranty expired.

I looked at it and passed. Do you really think you'd have repairs costing $2.5k in years 5 and 6? If so, I'd unload the car before the original warranty expires.

Also note the exclusions (or lack of inclusions). It's a sucky, costly warranty, and I think you're better off stashing the money in the bank and self-insuring.

Btw, my 530i passed thee 5 year mark three months ago, and I've had one leaky water hose. Still on the original brakes at 47k miles too.

200K miles? hmmmm
Who is offering you this warranty? The dealer? Is it being backed by BMWNA?

On a side note, who is your dealer in MD?

You can shop around for warranty prices. And, generally speaking, there is no way to answer the question of whether an extended warranty is worth it. A warranty is insurance. And, those in the know say that you usually should not insure against losses that you can readily bear. Insurance rates are baised in favor of the insurance Co.--like gambling odds in favor of a casino. You are not supposed to even break even when insuring.
