[quote name='ZinMe' date='Apr 29 2005, 11:50 AM']Yes, I guess I'll ask the dealer today, but my question is more how does the pricing and coverage differ if I were to buy the car today and buy the warranty today vs. leasing today and buying the warranty in three years when the lease is up and I exercise the purchase option?

In my opinion, on high end German cars, the extended warranty is a VERY smart thing to do.

Sorry, didn't catch your question. Don't know I'm afraid, but I don't think there's a huge difference in price. I agree about the German cars. I certainly plan on getting the extended warranty later, but as my car is just one year old now, I'll wait a while before buying it.

This is the main reason I am leasing-- if you get a car that has a lot of problems, you just don't exercise the purchase option at the end of the lease. So I'm fairly protected during the first three years, however, at the end of the lease, you have no protection unless you buy a very expensive extended warranty. I'm trying to find a way to have my cake and eat it too. Basically what I want to do is buy an option on an extended warranty, which I'm fairly sure is impossible.

My dealer mentioned this as well...purchase an extended warranty now, or before my existing warranty is up. I will put on about 20k miles per year, so in about 2.5 years, I'll get an extended warranty. But the key is to make sure you know what is covered and what is not. To be comfortable, I need something out to 100k miles or more if they have it. BUT, my dealer also offered an extended maintenance program, so after the four years/50k miles, I could even extend my maintenance if I wanted. I think he mentioned $1400 or something. I really may do this as it will include my inspection II and oil changes and breaks, etc.

Hypothetically speaking, if I can pay 2 grand for an extra 20,000 miles worth of warranty on my 2004, I'm doing it all day long.

Picked up my 2006 530i Wed. Dealer offered a maintenance program for $1195 which he said was at his cost. Coverage to 6yr/100M. Not a warranty...just maintenance.

Geico offers an extended warranty until 7yrs/100M with a deductible of $250. Cost is $39 every six months. Don't have to start until you have 15K or 15months on your BMW. I had this on my Audi and it really paid off.

Evenflow...I agree
Kris...The $1195 is what I believe was offered to me...that number sounds more correct. I will probably do this since I know I'll have this up to and past 100k miles and for me, that would be an additional 2.5 years of maintenance and the Inspection II. I'll check on the extended warranty through State Farm..the Geico offer sounds like a great deal!
