Exhaust System on the car

I was travelling along the M40 back from Marlow about 3 nights ago (around 6pm for anyone remotely interested) and caught upto a silver 2004 525d M Sport. He obviously saw me in the rear view and as soon as traffic parted he floored it so I obliged and followed. We were pretty much matched for speed and accleration.
We continued down the road and i stayed behind him for 20minute stint and then overtake and he would stay behind me for awhile and overtake. We even lined up our cars in the middle and outside lanes and paced eachother for a little bit which mustve looked quite cool from behind. (i bet you are thinking aww)
However whilst i was behind him i kept seeing a glint on the exhaust system. As i looked more carefully at it i could see a valve opening when he put his foot down. Except the valve only opened on the right exhaust pipe (as i was looking at it from behind)...
This struck me as somewhat odd that it didnt happen on both and i wasnt even aware there was a valve on the exhaust system...
Anyone got any ideas as to why?
