I have a 2004 3.0i petrol which is using a litre of 5/30w every 400 miles. There are no obvious leaks or visible signs of oil burning. Any suggestions? Would a heavier oil ease the problem?

I would have it looked at by a good mechanic, that's way too high consumption. The weight of the oil probably isn't the problem, maybe something with the PCV system.

I agree, 1 litre every 400 miles is excessive in any car. I can understand 1 litre in between oil changes, but not every 400 miles.

I agree ... something is amiss. I've never consumed oil at that rate even with BMWs w/over 150K miles

What about a quart every 4000 miles? Do you think that is excessive? I have 122K miles and started that consumption rate shortly after I hit 100K.
