Not the top gear track M3 / 535d both went round in 1.31.8

Don't know - that's the only place I've seen both cars race in stock form on TV........

and .... they pulled the same time....

Weird isn't it....

Trouble is ... with any other track times your generally looking at modded / race tuned cars, dissimilar conditions and a range of driver ability...

I've looked for 'ring' laptimes, but the source data is not clear.. maybe there is an official record site in germany ???

If you have alternative times I'd be interested to see them.. as you know I have a thing for the e46 M3 (understatement), but am also somewhat impressed that a big old bus like the 535d could get even close to an M..... (especially that one...I saw a black 02 plate M3 today and was completely jealous).

i have all the times for the m3 but none for the 535d, i guess its because its a big heavy automatic with no lsd, that noone wants to drive it competitively around tracks

That's the real beauty of what Top Gear have done, they have found a way to reflect track performance for stock cars ... which is great if you are considering buying one.....

I wish there was more of this sort of testing to give a second opinion, but as you say the times for the 535d aren't out there because it isn't a competetive race car... (no-one really races unmodified M3's either).

I'd take issue with you on the HEAVY comment though the M5 is 1830kg, the 535d 1735Kg and the M3 1570Kg.

I had expect the weight difference between the diesel and the M to be MUCH greater than it actually is.....

Those are BMW's website stats - I thought they would know what the unladen weight of their car was????

You can't just weigh someone elses car .. besides the fact that it would break the bathrooom scales.... what about the impact of optional equipment etc.....

No I think unladen weight is without driver - no matter how large....
