Uh oh! I was just reading the breakin rules...
"Don't go over 100 mph in the first 1200 miles".

Wouldn't that mean you can't go on the autobahn? (Or, you'd go relatively slow on the autobahn)

I don't understand what happens if you ... break... the break-in rules

Nothing happens.
The engine is perfect!
You should follow the break-in rule because the transmission is learning how you drive. But nothing serious happens if you just open it up and hitit...
It is just better to break-in, that's why BMW recommends it.
Hey, 120mph is pretty fast! On the most Autobahns you can't go that fast anyways!

I asked them in Munich about this. They said I should vary the RPMs and keep the engine under 4000RPM. In 6th gear thats about 120mph. The first 200 miles are key for the brakes and clutch. By 850 miles you should be able to let her out. They have had M3s come in after 200 miles with blown engines. Its not smart to drive at the RedLine in a new car.

My problem is that we drove south out of Germany the first day. 2 weeks later I was able to do whatever I wanted on the drive from Barcelona to Nice. The problem was that the roads just did not compare to the Autobahn and the Spanish and French have less than half the driving etiquette and skill as the Germans.

Agree - go easy on the brakes for the first 200 - 300 miles, and keep the speed reasonable. We did ED on my 540 in 2001 - kept it to 100 for a couple hundred, then a bit faster - up to 120 by 900 miles or so. Just don't stomp on it, braking or accelerating, driving fast on the highway isn't the same as flooring it off the line.

Keep speeds varied, and learn the car, then gradually let her out. Have a blast!

That's amazing how you can drive to other countries in europe... I wish there was a way to get to england, but that wouldn't work because they drive on the other side of the road!

Any good places to visit in europe? (there are plenty I know. anything *really* worth seeing?)

Ofcourse you can drive to England. Just hop on the chunnel. There is no law against driving a LHR in England. Ofcourse a co-pilot is essential for passing.

Agree completely - I asked in Munich also when I picked up my car. I spoke with the technician, and he said exactly the same thing. Vary the rpm, don't put a heavy load on the engine, easy on the brakes for 200 miles. After that, you can sneak a few 4500 rpm plus runs at part throttle.

I did 150 mph plus on a long downhill section of the Autobahn after 500 miles. Just about 3/4 throttle and only for a few seconds. That won't hurt the car, and boy was it fun.

I'd like to know why ED saves you money. Is it a BMW publicity stunt.

Many people drive from UK to Europe, and Europe to UK. It's quite easy, for those that are concerned about being on the "wrong" side of the road.

Not really. Maybe Glasgow or Lvov but apart from that, nothing.
