Sure they have... Especially in the 90's.

While I'm 40 now, and don't fully have my finger on the pulse of what kids (16 - 26) want today from an automotive perspective. I can tell you youngsters like my brother in law (21), whom I refer to as the "Fast & Furious sect", and his crew- are in love with Honda's (Acord Coupes, Civic & S2000), EVO's, 350Z's, and WRX's. However, this observation is from a distance, but it's what I hear them talking about when they argue abotu what's faster, what they saw on YouTube, etc... I don't hear BMW or Mercedes come up in their "If I had the money, I buy a..." conversations.

I know back in my day (teens & 20's), there were people who would rather have had a Accord with a ground effects kit, and some nice wheels- than a brand new 5- series. One of my best friends was in love with the Toyota Camry- which at the time was not nearly as sexy as it is today.

There are plenty of people who aspire to Honda's, that's why they sell so well. It's not from a lack of options, and it's not because they are cheap- there are plenty of cars one can have for under $25K - $35K (Price you'd pay for a nicely equipped to fully loaded Accord), including used BMW's... People buy Honda's because that's the car they want.

When you get older with a little extra $ to play with, or if you're fortunate enough to be born into a wealthy or well-to-do family, is when you start thinking about and posibly more capable of affording more expensive vehicles.

Personally, if a car ever becomes something I "aspire" to own again, I can tell you it won't be a BMW.

If I were to aspire towards a car, it'd probably be something more along the lines of a Bently Flying Spur, a Bentley Continental GT Speed, or a Rolls Royce Brooklands Coupe...

It's probably be the Bentley GT though!
Well the Continental GT sure is a fly car. Money no object, I'd love a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 Superveloce or, of course, the ultimate speed car of all, a Veyron .

Sedanwise, I am just not in love with huge sedans. I don't enjoy driving giant sedans. A M5 would do just fine. If I had to go giant, I'd go MB S65 or Bentley Continental GT Flying Spur Speed. I don't believe that BMW produces anything that competes with the MB S65 which is a damn shame. BMW is too busy devoting resouces to becoming the top maker of premium tall cars while letting the top S Class sedans to dominate the market unchallenged.

New 760 is right there, between S600 and S65.

There actually is one place that Honda and BMW are equal. Both have the highest residuals in the industry, mainly because people want to buy them preowned almost as much as they want them new.

Yes in terms of power, the 760i's TT V12, at 535 bhp produces more bhp than the S600 (510 bhp) and the S63 (518 bhp).

But, at 535 bhp and 550 lbs-ft, the 760 is a far cry from the S65's 604 bhp and pavement ripping 738 lbs-ft of torque. Of course, it is something like $65,000 cheaper than the S65.

The S-Class is still the default choice for the discerning plutocrat. Capable as the new 7 undoubtedly is, MB does have that particular segment pretty much locked down...

I agree. To me, in the mid-sized and small luxury sedan, I like BMW 3 Series and 5 Series a lot more than C Class and E Class.

But if $$ was no object and I was looking for a giant luxury sedan, I'd buy the S65 over the 760 in a heartbeat. To me, better looks and lots more power.

Agreed...

It took a while, but the new S-Class officially rubbed off on me about 12 months ago. This is the first time in a long time that I actually preferred the S-Class over the 7. That S550 is a sexy beast. With the AMG package, it's that much sicker. I still love the 7, but the S-Class is sexier.

When we got our Bimmer in May, there was a 2004 E500 Sport in the same price range... That's the one I wanted, but coming from the truck, the wife was concerned with our having a respectable amount of backseat room for our family (While not as big of a concern for me, at the time). In the front seat, the Merc was definitely the roomier vehicle, but in the back- the 5 had the E beat, hands down.

In terms of ride comfort, the E500 had the sport package, so it rode like a sports car. Even I didn't like that too much- not in a sedan.

Nevertheless, had the car been "mine" to buy, I'd have gotten the E500- just for the V8; and I'd have put up with the harder ride. But, this sedan (525) is mainly driven by the wife, and she preferred the softer ride of the BMW 525, over the knock your socks off power of the E550. Overall- I thought the 5 was the better choice as well- as much as it pained me to say it (I generally preferrred MB over BMW ~ 3-vs-C, 5-vs-E ).

Although the 312 HP E500 would have been more of a thrill ride aroudn town, and pulling away from red lights- than this 184 HP I6 is- this little joker pulls harder than I thought it would, and at 31 MPG on the highway was a pleasant surprise on our recent 1,000 mile trip. The only vehicle I've owned that was more fuel efficient had two fewer cylinders, and a lot less room.
