The wheels (and tyres) on an E60 must be the best there is.
If you change your OEM wheels to 18" or larger, get the linings checked.

Replicas and not OEM, please do not bother...

This pic (if you get the sense of this shitty one) is of how it works.

It measures the wheel lining digitally and accurately.

Ricracing is correct - the BMW OEM wheels have additional holes which the alignment tools (both front and rear) attach to at the BMW Service Center. Non-OEM wheels may or may not have these alignment holes and non-BMW Service Centers do not have this equipment, so they "hang" on the tire. Additionally, I learned they put weights inside the vehicle during the alignment to simulate a loaded vehicle traveling at moderate speeds. I recently had an alignment (new tires) and found the mounting/balancing/alignment charge of the BMW Service Center to be within 20% of an independent tire center.

Are you impling that if i upgrade from 18" to 19" (say 166 style) the wheel geometry changes and i have to re-allign it?

Actually... I believe that, normally, the tools mount to the rim. They clamp to the edge of the rim, not the tire. It's hard to tell from the fuzzy photo but to me it looks just like this...

Next time you go to the dealership for an alignment, check out the whether the alignment tool they use also has a center mount attachment which fits into the five holes adjacent to the lug nuts - I watch this procedure last week at my dealership. I also watched them align a vehicle with aftermarket wheels and, according to the technician, the accuracy couldn't match the procedure on OEM rims - It could have been a sales pitch, but it made sense to me.

Whenever we change, yes it is a must! To avoid any issues that might just surprise us.

You're being too vast. What kind of issues? Is this a general rule that when increasing the rim size and changing the tire size (for example on the back from 245/40 R18 to 285/30 R19) the geometry gets to be affected:camber/toe and so on? Are there different set-ups for each rim size? What other issues may occur? I thought only when you drop your car from springs with more than 4 max 5 cm will the geometry of the wheels become affected that could lead in some unwanted behaveiour (eg an excess of understeer) or too much tire wear or whatever.

Alignment should be needed when changing struts, coil over, or hitting the pothole or curb hard. There is no need to realign when changing wheels or tires. Let's see how much it cost for aligning active steering

Why would AS change alignment cost? There should be no difference.
