Upon going through the I-drive menus of the logic7 I came across a screen that looks like a bar graph that of some type of setting for the equalizer. Being a non-audiophile, I'm really at a loss as to what this does. I played around with the settings but by the time I was done, I'm not sure if it sounds as good as it did before I started playing around with it. Can someone tell me what the equalizer is supposed to do and what are the optimal settings. Thanks, I hope it's not too dumb a question but I just don't know.

Basically you can adjust different frequencies that you hear. Low frequencies are for bass (low pitch), the middle is for midrange, and the high for treble (high pitch).
For example, if you want to emphasize bass (drums, beats, etc), then boost up the low frequencies in the equalizer. If you want to emphasize high pitched stuff, turn up the high frequencies.

In a car, typically you only need to set this once. To get a more pronounced high and low end turn up the end bars and lower the center.

In addition to what everyone said, I personally have my settings like so (from left to right):
+5 bars
+2 bars
0 bars
-2 bars
0 bars
+2 bars
+5 bars
It stinks that these settings get erased with each iDrive re-programming but oh well... no biggie!

What really matters is what you like to listen to, and at what levels you usually play the set. I prefer classical and jazz at moderate to quiet levels, thus, I usually boost highs and lows a bit so that they come through while played at modest volumes (and compete with road noise).
Nowadays, many commercial rock or even soft rock stations over-amplify the base end of their signal and if I intend to listen to them for any period of time, I can tone down the left bass sliders.
You'll probabaly notice the most obvious difference in settings when you switch from concert hall to studio or club or whatever they call the tight, non-expanded (reverb) settings. Otherwise, I'm not too impressed with the $1300 worth of options the L7 provides: It won't rattle my neighbors windows or summon stray dogs.
Cheers,
Ray Hull
