On a trip a couple of weeks ago where I deliberately drove as efficient as possible for half an hour (between 80 and 100km/h with very mild acceleration) I achieved 4.5l/100km.

That's 62.8 MPG (US).

I thought the 520d was the best E60 in terms of mileage, but it's not correct! Your 545i is just as efficient! (per cylinder that is)

To be honest... you'd never be able to reach a value anywhere near that in real life unless you only drive when the roads are completely empty and you're very very patient. My average is ~6.5l/100km which is still pretty good I think. That's without trying to achieve low consumption (I don't pay for my fuel, company car).

Not to hi-jack your thread... but I'm noticing that my MPGs are quite the opposite. I've only had my car for 3 weeks, but my average MPG per tank of gas has been btwn 10 - 14 mpg. Right now, my avg speed is 16mph. My commute is 6 miles to work with no freeways.... lots of start and stop side streets. This past week, I've been trying to not drive with a heavy foot, just to see how much it helps... not a lot. I have an automatic and pretty much whenever I accelerate (even a little) my MPG needle drops to the minimum 12. Will this get better?

On the sticker, this car is rated 15/23. My last car, an Audi S4 twin-turbo v6 was rated 16/24 (I think) and I was getting around 17 MPG on my commute.

What are other 550i owners experiencing?

The only way to get the real MPG on your car is to do your own calculation. Fill up the tank, drive for 200+ miles and then use the calculator.
Try this if you don't like the MPG# showing on the iDrive. Fill up the tank, get on the freeway and reset the MPG. You will see the MPG# above 30.
It will drop gradually when you are back on the local streets. The MPG# in the iDrive is just an average number.

This will change in your favor. You have a bunch of factors against you now. First, your oil has not fully penetrated the engine. This will take a bit of time. Second, your tires have the best traction they will ever have when the car is new, but this traction also creates friction. Most of us here have noticed a gradual increase in gas mileage over time and wear on the car. Give it a little time, and your car will improve.

And you average 2 mph in Brooklyn traffic! I get 30-31 mpg averaging 72mph on long stretches of hiway, using 87 octane regular unleaded...

Really, you use 87 octane? Any pinging? I thought the minimum we're supposed to use is 91.

My 530i average around 21MPG, and I drive about 75% freeway. It's hard to believe the average can reach more than 30MPG.
Yeah, I know if I reset the system when I am on the freeway, I get get a lot more.

For people average over 30 MPG, are you guys getting more than 400 miles per tank of gas??

No problems whatsoever. Could be for several reasons.
The listed octane rating at the pump is the minimum octane. Actual could be higher at the couple of stations I use.
The engine computer whiz automatically adjust for the lower octane.
Most high performance cars get slightly better milage with high octane fuels, and if the EPA numbers are based on the higher octane gas, they have to make it (premium) a requirement for use.
I filled up empty tank halfway with regular to test, knowing I could stop at the next gas station and fill up with premium if there were signs of trouble. Had none. Can't speak for anybody else, but have driven 15K on regular now.

My 30 MPG is on 2 hour drives with low traffic, where very little speed changes are needed.
