Hi all,
Just order my 523i, do we need to running in the new engine? Heard that can't go beyond certain rpm for long period of times?

I assume you mean breaking in the engine. Generally it is a good idea, certainly does no harm to follow the guidlines. But many feel it is not needed in modern engines or simply that they are leasing the car and will be turning it in 3 yrs from now so why worry about the longevity of the engine.

Either search the forum on "breaking in" or look at the on line manual to read up on it, but yes something like don't exceed 4,000 RPM for first 1,500 miles. Also should vary the RPM, don't want a lot of highway cruising at 2,700 rpm for the break in period.

What effect would this have exactly ?

The mechanics need to get "exposure" to a more balanced range of stresses and strains during the running in period.

Not claiming to be an expert , simply repeating what the manual says... "vary engine speed" As to what the supposed benefit would be, I will have to defer to someone who knows more than I...

There you go, ABC beat to it.

I do recall reading something BMWCCA Tech Guy Mike Miller said about break-in, but can't put my hands on it at the moment (it's either in the CCA website or in "Bimmer" magazine). Anyway, the essential element was to put varying loads and varying RPMs to the engine during the first 1200 miles, and I recall that his view of the best way to do this was to run the car as much as possible in mountainous terrain. Of course, if you're in Kansas, that's not going to happen (maybe a good reason for a Colorado vacation, however). I'm sure someone else has read his ideas about this and could chime in with more details.
