How engines compare? Is there a lot of difference between old 3.0l I6 (M54B30) and new 3.0l I6 (N53B30)? Is there anyone who updated from pre-LCI to LCI and can compare how thw new one feels?

from what I see there are 31 HP more in N53 and 20 nM. Also the old red line was at 6.500 rpm and new one is 7.000 rpm. The new one get max torque at just 2.750 rpm.

I've driven E90 with N52B30 but the 3er is more sporty tuned and I cannot judge how N53 is in E60. Any comments?

Hi,
I have the LCI 530i but I haven?t driven the pre-LCI 530i so I can?t tell you how they compare. However, from what I?ve read the LCI N53 has faster throttle response and much better fuel economy than the previous engine(s).

The economy is as a result of the REGENERATIVE BRAKES and HPI.... but the engine is heavier than the previous N52 because the N52 is a Magnesium alloy block vs the standard engine block. However, the downside of the N52 engine is the lower 'beating' it can take vs a standard engine block....

The power difference, in Asia anyway, is 14bhp and 5Nm... not much of a difference... Sure, the response might be better (possibly due to new sports gear box?), but overall, I don't think its that much of a difference.... especially when there are so many variables...

However, if you compare the M54 vs the N52 vs the N53, then I believe that the difference would be felt.... M54 vs N52 vs N53 is 231bhp 300Nm vs 258bhp 310Nm vs 272bhp 320Nm, so yes, a difference would be felt...

Check the torque improvement.

Additionally the kinds of fuel consumption improvements indicated cannot be derived from brake energy regeneration etc alone.

The big improvements on the auto must be heavily influenced by the new auto box (not sport auto).

My response refers to your subject heading. I don't have older data.

Sorry for not making clear my question directly in the subject. Basically the life of N52 in E60 was very short, hence I left it out.

Of course when you said pre-LCI I didn't read carefully enough that you meant a pre-LCI engine which was no longer in production.
