I got the Engine Oil at Min Level, add 1 Quart of Oil, I-Drive message this morning as I was driving to work. I thought the oil was changed about 7000 or 8000 miles ago so I'm a little suprised. Anyways, since I just bought the car, I didn't want to take chances so I stopped by the local BMW dealer (Crevier in OC Cali) for my first service trip (hopefully thats it for a while). They topped off the Oil and now the Oil indicator shows a max oil level and all is well.
My question is does this indicate excessive oil consumption? So far I've driven the car about 1100 miles in a little over 11 days. I remember looking at the indicator (I-Drive) a few days ago and it showed a medium level of oil. I haven't noticed any oil leaks on the drive way either but I'll double check today. Also the service history indicates that about 7000 miles ago (car was at 30,000 at the time, now its at 37000) a permanent failure of the oil level/oil condition sensor occurred, and it was replaced.

No this is normal. On non-motorsport engines the BMW oil spec for consumption is 0.7 Litres (nor sure what this converets to) per approx 600miles. Also an oil consumption test shouldnt be performed on these new engines until they have been thouroughly run in. The genereal rule of thumb is that the first service must have been done and addidtional mileage should be put on the car after this service before you can test the engine and get acurate results ->everything is still getting worn in.

I have had several instances now where the oil level sensor has acted up. I routinely (7-10 days) check the oil level which normally reads full. Low oil dash light flashes on followed a few seconds later by iDrive message that the car is BELOW a quart of oil and to add oil before damage to the engine occurs. After letting the car sit for 5 min, a restart of the engine shows that my oil level is fine. Will be going for my annual oil change at the dealer to figure out what the problem is. I hope that your problem was simply a case of oil consumption and not a intermittant oil level sensor failure.

I got the little yield sign on the dash and nothing more. When I check the oil level it was a quart down.
I added a quart of oil all seems to good.
The car has 7,000 miles on it so I guess this is normal?
With most cars you change the oil but the BMW is supposed to go 15,000 miles?

It's perfectly normal they go through a quart about every 7K. Just make sure to use the right oil when adding.
