Hi to all,

I noticed that the icon for low in oil will come on intermittently. How much oil do I need to add? Thanks!

Probably a quart .. check iDrive Service Menu. Alternatively, add 1/2 quart at a time to see if the alert stops. How many miles since oil service was done? Has your car ever consumed oil during a similar amount of driving?

I'd stop and not add more than 2 quarts because it might actually be a bad sensor and not low oil level . You don't want to over fill as it can be harmful to your motor.

I am guessing that a 2005 545i has a dipstick because my 2004 does, so you should be able to get an accurate reading on your oil level. FYI, the dipstick is at the back of the engine bay to the right of the engine with a red pull handle. From my manual, "The oil quantity between the two marks on the dipstick is approx. 1.6 US quarts/1.5 liters. Do not fill beyond the upper mark on the dipstick. Excess oil can damage the engine."

I had to add one quart to both of mine. I am thinking that if the oil is not changed at mid point between service it's very likey that you will see this light. My 2010 and 2008 535i both do this if you wait for service.

Thank you all for the reply! I added 1 quart and the warning was gone. Like right now, I am due for an oil change in 2K but I only put in 5K since my last oil change. Most of it are from short and city driving. It is very seldom that I do highway.
