My wife was driving our E61 525dT today when the oil warning came up on the idrive. She took it to the dealer and they filled it up with a litre of oil. We took delivery of the car in June this year and we have driven it almost 17000 km. Does the engine really use that much oil?
Our previus petrol cars were serviced every 20000 to 30000 kilometers and we never had to fill them up with engine oil in between.

At least you got a warning, put washer fluid in my 535d the other day and thouht I'd check the oil....not on dipstick !!!! no warning at all, ended puting 2 litres in it. By the way this was at 13000 miles, which probably is not too excessive but no warning !! . Going to check it regurlarly now and get them to see if theres a problem with the low oil sensor , if there is one?

My 535d shows the oil level on the iDrive so it must have a sensor? That's not a good sign though, surely?

Built in August 07, delivered September 07. Maybe they changed to electronic on the LCI?
I had the same problem with my last 530d, I was going to check the oil before a long trip to France, and there was no oil on the stick at all. It happened before my first service.

I don't know what to think. Maybe it's a common thing with newer engines.....From what I have studied over the internet about this it's not a thing to worry and a lot of people say it's normal.

Is it just me or are we all just ignoring a problem because everyone else seems to have the same problem. I just bought a CPO'd 2004 545i that had 21,000 miles on it. At 28,000 miles the low oil light came on, it turned out to be 1.5 quarts low. The dealer gave me a laimens answer of " the oil seeps into new engines and it is nothing to worry about" My last BMW was a 1988 325is with 245,000 miles on it. I sold it due to its loss of 1 quart of oil every 5k miles due to worn parts and oil burning. I understand that a 15k mile oil change intervall is a new concept for BMW but My 2000 Mercedes C class had the flexible service interval of around 13k miles but that car did not loose one drop of oil between service. I can just see all of us driving down the road when our warranty is up and having smoke blowing out our tailpipes. I want someone to explain to me where the oil " seeps into" or even better can someone explain what kind of metal can absorb oil like the dealers are telling us.
